Overview The Finance Controller (North America) leads the accounting team and is directly responsible for general ledger management, accounts payable/receivable, escrow accounting, audit preparation, and the implementation of best practices and internal controls. Key Responsibilities Financial Accounting & Reporting Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements Lead the month end and year end closing processes Maintain and monitor the firm’s general ledger using the Elite 3E Cloud Accounting System Develop, implement and enforce accounting policies and internal controls Define the classification for GL natural codes and ensure consistency worldwide Develop an efficient approach to cost allocation, considering global business center costs Variance analysis vs. prior year and budget working together with regional financial planning and analysis team Custom attorney and client reports Department Oversight & Management Supervise and manage accounting staff, ensuring timely and accurate performance of daily accounting functions Oversee daily reconciliation of operating and escrow bank accounts and ensure proper posting of all transactions Approve and release all outgoing wire transfers (settlement payments, payroll, vendor payments, etc.) Manage the firm’s check writing application and develop plans to reduce or eliminate use of physical checks Manage the firm’s cash flow and ensure timely vendor payments while monitoring fluctuations. Oversee Employee and Partner travel and entertainment expenses, including travel cost through the firm’s recommended provider Trust and IOLTA process oversight Interoffice Coordination Coordinate interoffice funding and reporting with Global Treasury operations Work with Canada Controller to develop efficiencies and implement a work in the right places approach to controllership functions Audit Preparation & External Liaison Lead the year-end audit process in collaboration with external auditors Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations, and partner-specific financial reports Work cross functional to obtain all necessary support Maintain relationships with external auditors, banks, and financial institutions Technology & Systems Manage and maintain 3E Accounting software, including check writing application Online bank account management and access ChromeRiver invoice and expense reimbursement Reporting & Analysis Letters of credit, insurance applications, and sublease occupancy documentation and support Bespoke or executive reporting needs Maintain policies and procedures, keeping them current online Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field Professional accreditation such as certified public accountant (CPA), certified management accountant (CMA) or chartered global management accountant (CGMA) is strongly preferred 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2–4 years in a senior-level role (e.g., Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Senior Manager) Experience in a law firm preferred, but not required Technical Skills Proficiency in cloud based financial systems, such as Elite 3E and ChromeRiver Advanced technical skills with the ability to apply efficient data retrieval and analysis to large data sets.
